Nick and his twin sister Melissa were born to parents who had far more important things to do than look after a pair of kids. Namely, get as heavily involved in the corruption of the city as possible. This left Nick and Melissa to pretty much fend for themselves, and taught them from a young age that then only people they could rely on was each other. This led to them being extremely close, far closer than most people were comfortable with, which, of course, made them even more isolated.
It wasn't like they cared, though. They didn't need anyone, especially not their parents, seeing as their parents clearly didn't need or want them. The issue became a moot point when the twins were eleven, and one of the few non-corrupt cops in the city finally moved against their parents. They were arrested and sent to jail - apparently the people they worked with were more than happy to let them take the fall - and Nick and Melissa were left without any guardians.
Rather than risk being separated in the foster care system, Nick and Melissa took their chances on the street. Things were tough at first, while they figured out how to steal to survive and where the best places to spend the nights were, but they were helped by the cop who'd arrested their parents. He tracked them down and kept an eye on them, occasionally buying them lunch in the beginning when food was hard to come by. There was a bit of hero worship going on there, and the twins made it their goal to become cops like him.
Things got easier when they got older, and had a better way to earn money than stealing: stripping. Melissa changed her last name to Lyre so no strip club would have qualms about hiring siblings together, and they made more than enough money to put themselves through the police academy. Which was another reason for Melissa to change her name - they had a better chance at being partners as cops if they weren't known as twins. Of course, given their flirty, touchy-feely relationship, people tended to assume "lovers" instead, but that never really bothered Nick.
They stopped stripping when they made it through the academy, but becoming police officers wasn't exactly what they thought it'd be. The majority of the police force was just as corrupt as their parents had been, and they found out the cop who'd gotten them started on all of this was dead as a result of his unwillingness to go along eith it. Nick and Melissa stuck it out for awhile, attempting to make something of their careers, but eventually admitted there was no where for them to go as long as they refused to give in completely to corruption. So they decided screw it, they could make better money elsewhere.
With their contacts from their stripper days and their combined funds, they opened up their own strip club. Not only that, but they went into bounty hunting. Might as well use the skills they learned as cops to help them make money, and this way they could decide for themselves what jobs to take.
It's not exactly what he expected of their lives, when they made escape plans before their parents went to jail, but it's close enough to what they planned while on the streets. He and Melissa live in the office of the strip club, and between it and bounty hunting they're well enough off that they only strip on special occasions - or when they want something really shiny, considering the club's profits rend to double on the nights one of them dances. (Triple if it's both of them.)
So of course, then he had to start dreaming. And considering he shares a bed - or mattress, whatever - it's not like he'll be able to keep it secret for long.
